The coat of arms of the Washington family has been used to identify the family since the early 12th Century. Originally the family took possession of Washington Old Hall in County Durham, England before making its way to the colony of Virginia. The design is the basis for the coat of arms and flag of D.C. It is also found on the purple heart. It is said to have inspired the stars and stripes design of the United States of America flag, but little to no evidence has been found to support the claimed connection.
